Seattle, WA — Once an affordable way to get home safely after a night of drinking, Seattle’s “Fare Share” Ordinance has made driving drunk and possibly getting a DUI the cheaper option. The Washington Policy Center estimates that even when factoring in the legal fees, fines, and the mandatory breathalyzer ignition interlock on your car, you still come out ahead compared to taking a couple Ubers. When asked about the increase in drunk drivers on the road, Seattle City Council Budget Chair Dan Strauss said not providing gig workers a “living wage” is the bigger threat to our community, and well worth the risk of someone getting behind the wheel, crossing the median and slamming head-on into another vehicle. Seattle police have noticed the shift. “We’re seeing way more DUIs,” said Officer Martinez, “but on the bright side, traffic is moving faster because inebriated drivers tend to keep things moving.”
